Why Choose a Heat Pump?
What’s the difference between HVAC heat pumps and traditional HVAC systems? HVAC heat pumps can both cool and heat the space while traditional HVAC systems typically include a separate furnace for heating and an air conditioner for cooling.
How do heat pumps work? A heat pump uses a refrigerant cycle to transfer heat: in winter, it extracts heat from the outside air and brings it indoors, and in summer, it removes heat from inside to the outdoors. A reversing valve changes the refrigerant flow direction, making it an energy-efficient alternative to traditional furnaces and air conditioners by moving heat rather than generating it. A heat pump uses electricity as its energy source so it doesn’t need to burn gas or oil to generate heat, the source for most traditional systems. Compared to electric furnaces, heat pumps tend to be more efficient due to the dual capabilities of heating and cooling.
How efficient are heat pumps? Heat pumps can be significantly more efficient than traditional furnaces. The exact efficiency differential compared to traditional systems depends on multivariant factors including gas and electricity prices today and over time (i.e. when gas is cheap, a traditional system might still have a lower bill in the near-term). Heat pumps are rapidly gaining popularity across California for their ability to provide year-round comfort while being very energy-efficient and a view that energy-efficient technology and electricity as energy source are going to be the winners in the long-term.
Here’s why we believe they’re an excellent choice for your home:
All-in-One: Heat pumps deliver both heating and cooling, making them a convenient and cost-effective solution for every season.
Future-forward: Heat pumps use electricity to transfer cool and warm air rather than generate it using gas or other traditional sources. Hence, they resist rising prices of non-renewable energy sources.
Eco-Friendly: Reduce your carbon footprint by switching to a system that doesn’t rely on natural gas or other fossil fuels.
Rebates and incentives: With programs like TECH Clean California, HEEHRA, and the federal tax credit, the cost of upgrading has never been lower. Now is a great time.

Are all heat pumps created equal—and do all heat pumps qualify?
The short answer is: no. If you ask us, we think a long list of heat pumps is pretty great… but we didn’t come up with the regulation. The statewide and federal incentives only reward the installation of the highest energy-efficient systems.
Like traditional HVAC systems, heat pumps come with various differences, including different OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), efficiency ratings, and noise levels. Tax credits and rebates are typically only available for high-end heat pumps with Energy Star or equivalent ratings. Some heat pumps may qualify for a rebate but not the credit—and vice versa.
Navigating these options is very complicated, especially as your home layout, construction, environment, location, and, therefore, optimal HVAC and airflow design are unique. But don’t worry—our team at So Cal Aire are experts in traditional HVAC systems, new technologies, and the latest HVAC heat pump technologies. We will guide you to the best choices for your home. We’ll present you with heat pump and traditional HVAC system options to fit your needs.
